Fresh greens
Sprouting seeds at home
Sprouting is a simple way to grow fresh, crunchy greens on a kitchen worktop. The right container and a clean rinse routine matter more than clever equipment.
Jar, tray or clay sprouter?
Sprouting jars are easy to clean and suit many beginners. Tiered sprouters help if you want several batches at once. Clay sprouters create a naturally humid environment and are useful for some delicate seeds.
Basic routine
- Rinse the seeds.
- Soak according to the seed type.
- Drain thoroughly.
- Rinse morning and evening.
- Keep bright but out of harsh direct sun.
- Harvest when the shoots taste fresh and crisp.
Hygiene matters
Clean equipment before each batch. Finished sprouts should smell fresh, never sour or musty. If in doubt, discard the batch and start again.
