Grain storage at home

Whole grain stores better than flour, but it still needs the right conditions. Keep it dry, cool, pest-resistant and easy to reach, and fresh milling becomes a habit rather than a chore.

What good storage does

Good storage protects grain from moisture, insects, odours and kitchen heat. It also helps you see what you have, so you use older grain first and avoid forgotten bags at the back of a cupboard.

Sacks, jars or glass silos?

Sacks are practical for larger quantities. Jars are excellent for small households and visible storage. Glass silos are best when you want an organised milling area with several grains ready to dispense.

Simple storage rules

  • Keep grain dry and sealed.
  • Store away from strong smells.
  • Label grain type and purchase date.
  • Use older grain first.
  • Clean containers before refilling.
